Biographical statement

Dr. Ann Creighton-Zollar is associate professor of sociology and is an affiliate faculty member of the department of African American studies. Director of the AAS program between 1993 and 1998, she earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Illinois. Before coming to VCU in 1981, Creighton-Zollar was a public health service trainee in applied sociology and social policy and served as the supervisor of research and evaluation at Garfield Park Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center, which was a grand experiment in serving an all-black catchment area with an all-black professional staff. Creighton-Zollar’s areas of specialization are comparative family systems and race relations.

Research interests

Dr. Creighton-Zollar’s goal as a human being is to eliminate disparities in the chance to life and in life chances that result from the social construction of race. This life goal is reflected in her research with a concern for reducing and eliminating racial disparities in health and in education. More specifically her current research interests include: (1) The Black/White gap in infant mortality; (2) how increasing the parenting skills and capacities of parents and other caregivers can improve the health and educational outcomes for children; (3) How low threshold technologies can be used to improve communication.
