Assessment of course goals and learning outcomes

Our responsibility to undergraduate students is to ensure that our core courses function to meet the goals and learning outcomes of the major. Throughout the academic year, the Department of African American Studies conducts assessments of student learning. These assessments provide both direct and indirect measures of student learning in the classroom and in the field. 

Academic Program Review

According to VCU guidelines, the elements of a program review process include a self-study and evaluation that is multidimensional, an external review, and an implementation of the action plan. The self-study and evaluation (referred to as self-study) serve the dual purposes of demonstrating accountability and improving performance. The Department of African American Studies is accountable to our students, community, and the Commonwealth to provide and produce excellent instruction, research and scholarship, and service. Continuous improvement is necessary for us to reach and sustain standards of excellence, remain competitive, and meet our responsibilities to our stakeholders.

The next academic program review in the Department of African American Studies is scheduled for 2016. The academic program review will: (1) describe and re-evaluate our contribution to the university mission and strategic plan, the needs of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and where appropriate, the needs of the profession it serves; (2) measure and analyze our overall productivity and quality of performance (including teaching, research and scholarship and service); (3) identify existing and potential areas of excellence and distinctiveness; and (4) guide decisions regarding funding, continuation, and improvement.
